Why Verizon's 9 Proposed Cell Tower Antennas Would Present a Health Risk to Middletown Residents

Updated: May 4, 2019

The graph show above is from a peer-reviewed European study showing how various reported health issues commonly associated with cell towers increased with proximity to and dropped off over distance from those installations. In 2017, almost 200 scientists and doctors from 35 countries warned of potential serious health effects of 5G. They recommended "a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry." They also noted that: "5G will substantially increase exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on top of the 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, etc. for telecommunications already in place. RF-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment." See the full text of their warning here:

http://emfsafetynetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Scientist-5G-appeal.pdf The power behind a cell tower antennna can range from 100 up to 500 watts, which is much greater than that of an individual cell phone that ranges from only 0.6 to 3 watts. That power difference is what makes cell towers with multiple antennas (9 in the case of this proposed Verizon installation) potentially much more harmful for those living in their danger zone of roughly 300 meters radius from the tower. Putting such a high power output tower in the center of our small town is both unnecessary and potentially dangerous, especially to children with thinner skulls and those living, working and worshiping within the high risk zone. Sadly, nearby cell towers are just not a laughing matter. Many of us opposed to cell tower proliferation also refuse to regularly use or carry cell phones for exactly the same reasons we wish to avoid living under cell towers. They remain unsafe devices for anything other than emergency or occasional use in the view of many informed citizens.

Even relatively mainstream media sources like Vox raise serious questions about the safety of cell towers stating: "We don’t yet understand the effects of cellphone radiation on fertility and the cancer risk for children." While some people who have not done their homework on this issue may feel ok with the risks, the more knowledgeable people will typically refuse to participate in this mass experiment until more non-industry funded science has either improved the safety of cell tower antenna technology or shown it to be unequivocally safe, which has not happened thus far.

For a plethora of peer-reviewed science references and a balanced treatment of the subject of the numerous harms of cell tower antenna radiation, you can look at this position paper by the International Association of Fire Fighters. This organization researched the matter in detail before adamantly opposing cell tower construction on fire stations to protect its members.

That IAFF position paper states, "Internationally acknowledged experts in the field of RF/MW radiation research have shown that RF/MW transmissions of the type used in digital cellular antennas and phones can have critical effects on cell cultures, animals, and people in laboratories and have also found epidemiological evidence (studies of communities, not in the laboratory) of serious health effects at "non-thermal levels," where the intensity of the RF/MW radiation was too low to cause heating." They have found (refer to the paper linked above for numbered references):

  • Increased cell growth of brain cancer cells (5)

  • A doubling of the rate of lymphoma in mice (6)

  • Changes in tumor growth in rats (7)

  • An increased number of tumors in rats (8)

  • Increased single- and double-strand breaks in DNA, our genetic material (9)

  • 2 to 4 times as many cancers in Polish soldiers exposed to RF (10)

  • More childhood leukemia in children exposed to RF (11)

  • Changes in sleep patterns and REM type sleep (12)

  • Headaches caused by RF/MW radiation exposure (13)

  • Neurologic changes (14) including:

  • Changes in the blood-brain-barrier (15)

  • Changes in cellular morphology (including cell death) (16)

  • Changes in neural electrophysiology (EEG) (17)

  • Changes in neurotransmitters (which affect motivation and pain perception) (18)

  • Metabolic changes (of calcium ions, for instance) (19)

  • Cytogenetic effects (which can affect cancer, Alzheimer's, neurodegenerative diseases) (20)

  • Decreased memory, attention, and slower reaction time in school children (21)

  • Retarded learning in rats indicating a deficit in spatial "working memory" (22)

  • Increased blood pressure in healthy men (23)

  • Damage to eye cells when combined with commonly used glaucoma medications (24)"

In addition, schools have had cell towers removed due to serious associated health issues, like the cancers suffered by students and teachers at this school that is believed to have been triggered by microwave radiation emitted by the tower.

Some people may erroneously think of cell tower transmissions as similar to that of the FM band of radio frequencies, but FM radiation is merely in the 88 to 108 MHz range and FM radio towers are located at a considerable distance to Middletown. Here, the issue involves the emission of considerably more energetic (and hence more potentially damaging) microwaves in the 600 MHz to 71 GHz range from the 9 cell tower antennas Verizon plans to install in central Middletown. This powerful radiation will also be emitted at relatively close range since the tower will be located quite near the ground, according to Verizon's proposal.

Basically, this unwanted exposure to microwave radiation is a known health risk we can avoid if we work together to oppose it.
